The word “moffie” is a uniquely South African slur that has been used to marginalise and shame people for many years. As part of a campaign to denuclearise this often painful and derogatory term our director, Oliver Hermanus, sat down with a collection of South African men that he admires to tell their story and experiences with the word. “Our power as storytellers is to create awareness and discussion, to activate a conversation and share ideas,” says Hermanus who has always been very conscious of his intention in making MOFFIE and in choosing the film’s title. “I hope that these videos will give you the courage to live your authentic self in every sphere of your life and that they give you the power to deactivate any negativity that the word ‘moffie’ has ever brought to you.
