Director Julian Schnabel on Vincent van Gogh's undying appeal | AT ETERNITY'S GATE | TIFF 2018

Julian Schnabel is an artist and filmmaker. His paintings, sculptures, and works on paper have been exhibited all over the world. He has written and directed the feature films Basquiat (96), Before Night Falls (00), Berlin (07), The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (07) — for which Schabel won Best Director at both Cannes and the Golden Globes — and Miral (10). At Eternity's Gate (18) is his most recent feature. Willem Dafoe teams with painter and director Julian Schnabel (Basquiat, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) for this unorthodox but reverent account of Vincent van Gogh’s troubled last days. Schnabel devotes much of At Eternity’s Gate to the act of creation itself, presenting the Post-Impressionist master’s artistic process as a visceral and internal experience while Dafoe, as Van Gogh, conveys the strenuous physicality of painting. The result is a kaleidoscopic and immersive film about being alive and reaching, through art, for the eternal — and about the beauty and wonder Van Gogh left behind, unaware of the profound impact it would have. http://tiff.net
