At the 56th New York Film Festival, writer-director Bi Gan and actor Huang Jue discuss their staggering new film Long Day's Journey Into Night, which is now playing in 3D at the Film Society of Lincoln Center: https://www.filmlinc.org/nowplaying Following his knockout debut, Kaili Blues (ND/NF 2016), writer-director Bi Gan returns with this immersive art-house sensation that broke box office records in China. Long Day’s Journey Into Night is a noir-tinged film about a solitary man (Huang Jue) haunted by loss and regret, told in two parts: the first an achronological detective story, the second a nocturnal dream. Again centering around his native province of Guizhou in southwest China, the director has created a film like nothing you’ve seen before, especially in the second half’s hour-long, gravity-defying 3D sequence shot, which plunges its protagonist—and us—through a labyrinthine cityscape. An NYFF56 selection. A Kino Lorber release. The 17-day New York Film Festival highlights the best in world cinema, featuring top films from celebrated filmmakers as well as fresh new talent. Since 1963, NYFF has brought new and important cinematic works from around the world to Lincoln Center. In addition to the Main Slate official selections, the festival includes newly restored classics, special events, filmmaker talks, panel discussions, the avant-garde showcase Projections, and much more.
