A key element to 'Yellowstone' is the use of scenes from Doubleband's 1998 ‘Too Late For Names’ - a documentary about infant death but which followed the director’s parents, Paddy McCann and Sharon Kelly, as they simultaneously prepare for the birth of a new baby and grieve the loss of 3 previous children. The documentary culminates in the birth of the child - the director himself. Footage from this documentary form key scenes in Yellowstone, combined with sequences the director recorded himself whilst in hospital on floor ten of BCH. Mac Cana forms a story of personal and family / generational loss, echoing repetitions through time. It is a film told in an intimate, unconventional, fragmented and deeply personal manner, drawing on a range of visual styles with which the filmmaker has been developing through his own practice in the last number of years, augmented by a poignant score by music producer, Moon Paw Print.
‘Yellowstone’ is a work interwoven with themes of beginnings, endings, life and death and ultimately of hope.
