Monty Python's Life of Brian composers André Jacquemin and John Altman | BFI Q&A

André Jacquemin, Monty Python sound designer & co-composer of songs such as The Brian Song, and John Altman, Python musical collaborator, arranger/conductor and whistler on Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, talk about writing music for the comedy troupe's religious satire. ‘He’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy’: In Life of Brian Brian Cohen spends his life being mistaken for the Messiah due to a series of coincidences that are seized upon by a fanatical group of followers. This controversial religious satire was unseen in various parts of the world (including certain UK counties) for many years, but its endlessly quotable lines and irreverent humour make it a comedy classic. Life of Brian
Brian Cohen is an average young Jewish man, but through a series of ridiculous events, he gains a reputation as the Messiah. When he's not dodging his followers or being scolded by his shrill mother, the hapless Brian has to contend with the pompous Pontius Pilate and acronym-obsessed members of a separatist movement. Rife with Monty Python's signature absurdity, the tale finds Brian's life paralleling Biblical lore, albeit with many more laughs.
